Types of Inspection Bodies in ISO 17020
ISO 17020 classifies inspection bodies into three types based on their independence and the nature of their operations. Type A inspection bodies are fully independent third parties, offering the highest level of impartiality as they are not involved in the design, manufacture, supply, installation, purchase, ownership, use, or maintenance of the items they inspect. Type B inspection bodies are separate but part of an organization involved in the inspected item's design, manufacture, supply, installation, purchase, ownership, use, or maintenance, providing internal inspections while maintaining a degree of separation to ensure impartiality. Type C inspection bodies are also part of an organization involved in the inspected item's design, manufacture, supply, installation, purchase, ownership, use, or maintenance, but they offer inspection services to external clients while being less independent than Type B bodies, often involved in the activities related to the items inspected. This classification ensures clarity in the level of impartiality and independence offered by the inspection bodies.
