Hot Export Tool tutorial - as replacement for Mapzen Metro-Extracts
In this tutorial I will show you how to use the open source Hot Export Tool as a replacement for Mapzen Metro Extracts. Mapzen has announced that they will be closing down January 31st, 2018. So users of the Metro-Extracts shapefile Service will be needing a replacement.
I made this tutorial to help followers of my Photoshop Map Art tutorial series, as a reference to assist them in accessing openstreetmap shapefiles for their projects. However, anyone who previously was using Metro Extracts for shapefiles, will need a replacement starting in February 2018. In addtion to shapefiles, the Hot Export Tool also can export openstreetmap data to a variety of formats including Geopackage .gpkg, Garmin .img, Google Earth .kml, OSM .ppf, MAPS.ME .mwm, MBTiles .mbtiles, and POSM bundles.
I really like the Hot Export Tool. Not only does it allow you to visually expand or shrink the shapefile's boundary, but it allows you to reduce the amount of features to only the ones you choose.
These two advantages allow for efficent shapefiles that are only as large as necessary to get the job done
The HOT Export tool has been created by the Humanitarian Open Streetmap Team whose volunteers create free up-to-date maps and open source programs and applications to aid relief organizations responding to disasters or political crises. https://www.hotosm.org/about
