Is raw slowly dying as still photography format? - A Point in Focus S5E4
Welcome back to the vlog. I haven’t done one of these in a while, but I’ve been chewing on this thought for a while now. The question today is, “is raw, as a still image format, slowly dying a death of 1000 cuts?”
Why does this seem to be happening? To me, it seems like a lot comes down to changes in the engineering, and more importantly, the tradeoffs that are being made in lens design now that we’re using mirrorless cameras. With no optical viewfinder to let you see the truth, lens engineers can rely more heavily on software corrections to smooth over the problems in their lenses. This in turn cascades into limitations as to what the cameras can do while still maintaining a raw output.
I think this limitation may then cycle back around into the design of new features. That is, it may be quiet easy for the design teams to say, “well, without fixing up the lens aberrations, we can’t insure optimal image quality or a consistent user experience, so lets just not make this feature available to raw users.”
