9 Things Living Abroad Can Teach You from an Expat Who's Lived in Morocco, India, and Now Ecuador
1. Life can feel like it’s always changing and sometimes overwhelming, but you have no choice but to adapt.
2. Motherhood is hard to do alone, but you will find ways to manage. Having a village would be nice, but there are trade-offs like hiring help and joining friend groups. Just know you are not alone ❤️.
3. Supporting local businesses is important and necessary. Seeing how hard people work in other countries highlights the importance of supporting those working hard for you.
4. Driving internationally requires more focus and patience. You have to be aggressive and always alert. As I joked with my husband yesterday, you need to actively drive while watching for distractions.
5. There are always affordable cities and countries to visit. While living in India, we traveled to many nearby countries. One of our favorite adventures was to Bangkok, Thailand. Living close by made it possible.
6. Living slowly and intentionally is a good idea. As a mom and entrepreneur, I must constantly remind myself to slow down and enjoy one of the many purposes of life abroad: to live differently.
7. You see beauty everywhere you travel. Growing up in Colorado, I thought I knew beauty. But living abroad has shown me dreamlike landscapes I never imagined.
8. Making healthier choices is easier abroad due to limited access to certain foods and ingredients. I indulge when visiting the U.S., but I never worry about getting back on track when I return home, thanks to less processed and more whole foods.
9. You are responsible for making your living abroad experience positive. Don’t let others’ perspectives determine your future. Research, save up, secure a good job or prospects, and approach your journey with an open mind.
