Your mathematics professor or teacher is an imbecile who has never understood even the basic concept of number, never mind basic arithmetic operations.
In essence, division is the simplest operation that was made most complicated and multiplication (which comes from division and not the other way round) is considered simpler in mainstream because they never understood fractions or division but learned these things rote.
Which is clearer?
[A] 12 : 3 = 4 because we share out 12 by 3 one by one
[B] 12 : 3 = 4 because 3 measures 12 as a UNIT exactly four times
