American composer Douglas Moore is best known for his operas (Carrie Nation, Ballad of Baby Doe, Devil and Daniel Webster, among others), but he also composed many orchestral works including two symphonies, stage, chamber and instrumental works worthy of attention. He composed his Overture on an American Tune in 1932. While Moore composed in a definite American idiom, he seldom used real American tunes for his works, but rather created his own. In the case of the Overture on an American Tune, he created his own melody that was American in spirit and character.
