After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the subsequent reunification of Germany in 1990, the political landscape of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) changed drastically. Many of the GDR's leading political figures, who had once played key roles in the socialist government and society, found themselves confronted with a new reality. Some found themselves integrated into the new democratic order, while others had to answer for their actions in court. This transformation of the political landscape offered a wide range of fates for the former leaders of the GDR.
