Finally having enough to eat and a place to live – these were the desires of the post-war era. Normal life was supposed to return – after the war, after a period of economic and political uncertainty. It was in this context that the "Wirtschaftswunder" (economic miracle) developed, a phase of rapid economic growth in the Federal Republic of Germany during the 1950s and early 1960s. A central figure in this process was Ludwig Erhard, who, as Minister of Economics and later as Chancellor, played a key role in implementing market-oriented reforms. Erhard is considered the father of the social market economy, a model that combines economic freedom with social security and laid the foundation for the economic miracle. His policies of deregulation, currency reform, and the promotion of competition created the conditions for the rapid growth and reconstruction of the German economy.
