As Darth Sidious stood over Anakin Skywalker on Mustafar, he nearly left his fallen apprentice to a molten fate. But instead of abandoning years of grooming the Chosen One to be his apprentice, Sidious chose a path that would bind Darth Vader with the dark side. The loss of Anakin Skywalker’s limbs would diminish his power in the Force, yet Sidious knew Vader’s true weakness would be psychological. But what drove Palpatine to design Darth Vader’s suit with deliberate flaws? Sidious had many deficiencies built into Darth Vader’s suit of armor. For example, the life support system required needles to constantly pierce his skin and the cumbersome armor and outdated prosthetics limited even the most basic movements. This was punishment for his failure, but also to ensure Vader would focus on his anger and hatred, deepening his connection to the dark side. The most insidious feature was its forced solitude. The black shell became a prison, trapping Vader in isolation with only his suffering and failures.
