Tango for Glenn - performed by Karen Smithies
The second of my pieces I've had the pleasure of recording with Karen Smithies is Tango for Glenn, a tango in 5/8 (mostly) that evokes the sound of Bach on the piano, something I particularly associate with Glenn Gould.
My approach to writing for piano is largely to take improvised ideas that I can play, then develop them in notation software through a process of education, instinct and/or trial and error, until I arrive at something I almost always can't play (although definitely with a mind towards playability). It's definitely a relief to know that these pieces are moderately challenging in parts but also quite playable to someone of Karen's calibre, and she's done a great job of capturing the spirit of the piece too.
Thankfully there's no audible mumbling or singing in this performance, but if anyone feels it's necessary I could always add some in later.
