RENNELL ISLAND | Bellona, Solomon Islands
Rennell is the largest raised coral atoll in the world. The site comprises a three-mile marine area. After the rise of the original atoll, its lagoon gave rise to Lake Tegano, which is the largest of all the Pacific islands. In its brackish waters emerge numerous limestone islets that are home to endemic species. The site is covered by thick forests whose canopy reaches an average height of 20 meters. In addition, its climatic conditions, characterized by the frequency of cyclonic phenomena, make it a true natural laboratory for scientific studies.
