HALLWYL CASTLE | Aargau, Switzerland
The origins of Hallwyl Castle date back to the late 12th century when the then lords of Hallwyl founded a small defensive complex on the banks of the Aabach stream, some 700 metres north of Lake Hallwyl.
Over the years the castle underwent more modifications, restorations and reconstructions, even adding a mill, and was unoccupied for decades until the early 20th century when the Hallwyl's descendants took an interest in it, restored it and created a foundation to manage it and open it to the public.
Today, Hallwyl Castle is a museum. The exhibits are divided into 11 themes showing life from medieval times to the present day. Each theme presents a selected member of the Hallwyl family and as the tourist wanders through the interior an audio guide accompanies him or her.
