Forestry Mulching and other methods of land clearing will be mentioned in this video. I talk about the 4 most common types of land clearing, which one we chose for our property, and why. I shared some great footage from some other youtubers that can enlighten you on specific types of land clearing that are different from the one that we chose. Hank from Hamiltonville Farm has shared some bulldozing video footage with us and has a great playlist on tractors and bulldozing. Daniel from Arms Family Homestead has some killer footage ofprescribed/controlled burning and an extensive playlist that will help you out if that is the method you are considering. For us, we chose foresty mulching as our intitial means of land clearing and then we are going to go back and start hand clearing for round 2.
We chose forestry mulching because we do not have a good foundation for growing fodder for animals, gardens, and a food forest. For us it made sense to take what we were "removing" and give it back to the land. By doing so we have done more of a "back to eden" style which is a great start to amending our land and getting it ready to farm on. Forestry mulching has so many benefits; protecting the soil, retaining moisture, and creating a living habitat for microbiomes as it breaks down...just to name a few. The only "con" I could see to forestry mulching is if you need a clean slate for building, or if you planned on doing a complete overhaul and over seeding the entire property.
By creating a rich top soil through forestry mulching, we enabled a hidden seed bank to come to life. We now have 5 acres of mostly 2 different types of hucklberry, and ofcourse plenty of new oak growth which our first farm animals are going to love! I am so happy with the results and that in choosing the right land clearing method for us, we instantly have free food for our free range animals. That is pretty stinking cool.
I hope this video helps get you started on understanding what your options are, and that this along with the additional resources provided, will help you to figure out what is best for your land and your current situation. We would love to hear from you and if you want to follow as we continue to work on our farm, don't forget to subscribe.
Hope that you are all having a very blessed day and we will see you in the next video!
