Real World Comparison - Smartphone vs Pro Camera - Long Exposures
Since I discussed an iPhone external control add-on device (Fjorden), I wanted to do a real world comparison of an iPhone versus a pro-quality camera. I wanted to go on a real landscape shoot, and use these devices side-by-side. On one end, the iPhone and its touchscreen controls; on the other, a Sony A7RIV and its external controls. I went to the lighthouse in Holland, MI, during a sunrise for this test. I figured I'd try to focus on long exposure photography, as I thought that could provide an interesting opportunity to try to use slow shutter speeds on an iPhone. Unfortunately, the iPhone only let me go as slow as 1 second. After filming and editing this, I came to the realization that this might be a better test if it was done in a manner that didn't require tripods--like street photography. Perhaps that can be a part 2 to this video down the road.
With about six months to go (hopefully) until Fjorden starts fulfillment, I'm pretty excited about the concept of an iPhone with external camera controls. I don't really shoot with my iPhone much, so it was fun to get out with it to give this a shot. If you haven't heard about Fjorden, go over to Kickstarter and check it out.
