Do all breast cancer patients need to do a PET scan? In this video, Dr. Jay Anam (Breast cancer surgeon, SSO Hospital, Mumbai) gives an answer to this question in detail.
0:41 - What is PET Scan?
PET Scan is a metabolic or biochemical scan that is done in the full body and this helps in giving some information about the metabolic and biochemical functions of every organ.
1:01 - What is done in PET Scan?
There is a special radioactive dye that is given through IV in intravenous. The dye spreads in full body and where ever there is more metabolic activity, the dye stops there. After that, there is a scan of the body. In the scan, that radioactive dye lights up and that is seen in the scan.
1:31 - Why is PET Scan used in Cancer?
Whenever there is cancer, due to PET Scan the radioactive dye stops in that particular organ that has cancer. The metabolic activity increases in that particular area of the organ where the cancer cells multiply in speed. For the confirmation of cancer, a biopsy is needed. Your doctor will do a few investigations to find out whether it is cancer or not.
3:06 - Indications of PET Scan
PET Scan is used in the staging of breast cancer. To know whether breast cancer has spread to other organs or not PET Scan is done.
PET Scan is used to check the functioning of the heart.
PET Scan is used in the study of the brain.
4:17 - Role of PET Scan in Breast Cancer
Breast Cancer is divided into 4 stages. Stage 1 and stage 2 breast cancer is known as Early Breast Cancer. When it is early breast cancer there is no role of PET Scan. Studies show that stage 1 and stage 2 breast cancer's possibility of spreading to other organs is 1%. PET scans can be done in patients having symptoms of cancer spreading to other organs.
6:04 - PET Scan should be advised in the following conditions -
1. Tumor size is more than 5cm.
2. Multiple lumps in the armpit.
3. Involvement of breast cancer in the skin.
