Before knowing what is stage 2 of breast cancer let us understand what does stage of breast cancer means? or how do we classify cancer into stages? In this video, Dr Jay R. Anam (Breast cancer surgeon, SSO Hospital, Mumbai) will talk about Stage 2 Breast Cancer Treatment
While diagnosing breast cancer, doctors check these things
1. Size of the tumour
2. Number of draining nodes in the tumour
3. Spread of tumour or has cancer metastasized.
Accordingly, all cancers are classified from Stage 1 - Stage 4
Stage 4 or metastatic stage is common for all which means cancer has spread to the entire body.
Lets us know regarding stage 2 breast cancer.
Stage 2 breast cancer is also known as early breast cancer. We can say breast cancer in stage 2 when it satisfies these conditions :
Size of the tumour is between 2cm - 5cm
If the tumour is spread one to three nodes
Size is more than 5cm but has not spread to axillary nodes.
Treatment of Stage 2 breast cancer
Surgery
-Chemotherapy
Radiation Therapy
Depending on the size of the tumour, the tumour to breast ratio size, age of the patient, fitness of the patient also it depends on the patient when she wants to conserve her breast or undergo mastectomy, Accordingly, the treatment is tailored.
Depending on the size and location of the tumour, surgical options may include:
-breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy)
-Mastectomy with or without reconstruction
following surgery depending upon the final histopath report and type of the tumour, we proceed for the next treatment chemotherapy and radiation to the local area.
For stage 2 breast cancer, hormone therapy can be effective for estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) or progesterone receptor-positive (PR+) cancers, which may continue to 5-7 years.
Targeted therapy has the ability to detect certain proteins or enzymes associated with cancer cells. For instance, with HER2-positive breast cancer, targeted therapy can disrupt the high levels of growth-promoting protein on the surface of the cancer cells. Targeted therapy is given for the duration of 6 months to 1 year.
Treatment for breast cancer is patient-tailored treatment. It varies from patient to patient.
