Time-Lapse: Super Flower Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse - May 2022
On May 15/16 2022 there was a Super Flower Blood Moon Eclipse. What is that you may ask?
To break it down, the orbit the moon makes around the earth isn't a perfect circle, it's more of an elipse. In this case, the moon was at its closest point to earth in its orbit. It was full at the same time that it was rising (local time). This gives it a bigger appearance, the super part.
Throw in a lunar eclipse, when the earth is directly between the Moon and the Sun. This is where we get the blood moon part. The only light that reaches the moon at that point is filtered by Earth's atmosphere. It only allows the rays of light in the red spectrum, giving the moon a blood-red appearance.
The flower part of the name is because May is typically when more flowers bloom.
Generally, there are two lunar eclipses, and a solar eclipse each year. The next lunar eclipse is in November, but will only be a partial eclipse. Solar eclipses are rare, as they tend to happen faster, and aren't always visible in largely populated areas. A lot of people will travel to see them because of this.
