Watch the Sun "Melt" into the Gulf

I took my telescope to a beach to watch the Sunset. Atmospheric distortion made it look almost as if the Sun was melting. It was interesting how the Sun began to be reflected as it got closer to the surface of the water. Then just before it appeared, from this vantage point, to go below the horizon, the shape started changing. Similar to the distortion we see when looking at objects behind, or in a glass of water.
I also found it interesting how the heat haze/shimmer, the same effect that gives stars their twinkle, swept across the surface of the water. It was also interesting how it distorted some of the birds that dove down to catch a fish or rest floating on top of the water.
