The Pace Report: "Respecting The Elders" The Matthew Whitaker Interview/ ThePaceReport
Welcome to this special edition of The Pace Report live from Harlem Week 2004.
This year's Jazzmobile hosted the Great Jazz On The Great Hill at Central Park during Harlem Week festivities in Harlem, New York. Opening this year's concert is pianist and organist Matthew Whitaker.
Over the last decade, Matthew has played all over the world and has released four albums. His latest album "On Their Shoulder: An Organ Tribute" pays honor and tribute to some of Matthew's organ heroes including Dr. Lonnie Smith, Jimmy Smith, and Joey DeFrancisco.
He's a three-time ASCAP Foundation Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers Award winner. He has performed and been featured on many national television shows including 60 Minutes, ABC News, the Today Show, Ellen, and Showtime at the Apollo. Last year Matthew was the musical director for the musical on the life of the legendary Billy Strayhorn "Billy Strayhorn: Something to Live For".
After his performance at the Great Jazz On The Great Hill at Central Park in Harlem, I sat down with Matthew about his organ influences and what inspires him as a musician.
