In a career spanning over six decades, vocalist and actress Freda Payne has become a soul legend who's reinvented her career and continues to be a trailblazer at 80. Recently she starred as jazz vocalist Ella Fitzgerald in the musical "Ella, The First Lady of Song" in her native hometown of Detroit. This year Ms. Payne performs a tribute to Ella with a big band at this year's 2024 Syracuse Jazz Festival to rave and critical reviews. She also released her all-tell autobiography "Band of Gold" which details her journey as a vocalist and performer.
In this special edition of The Pace Report interviewer Brian Pace sits down with Freda to discuss her connection to Ella, reflections on her current autobiography, and her iconic hit record "Band of Gold."
