THE FIRST COMPASS
The history of the compass unfolds over a long period. It is very difficult to pinpoint the exact origins of the very first compass in history. We know, firstly, that its emergence can be traced back to China. Secondly, we can look to Ancient Greece, where a shepherd in Magnesia is said to have discovered the phenomenon of magnetism using his crook (his staff).
In any case, searching for the very first compass in history means examining the development of navigational instruments, such as the astrolabe or the compass. Above all, the compass, along with other innovations, enabled the Age of Discovery, with figures like Zheng He in China, and Christopher Columbus and Magellan in Europe, all thanks to a phenomenon that would only be truly perfected much later: magnets, magnetism, and the precise location of magnetic north.
