The history of photography is one of a long evolution of knowledge. The phenomenon of the black box has been known for a very long time, but the knowledge of chemistry prevented the image from being fixed at the bottom of this box for a long time. The 19th century was a major turning point because new knowledge finally made photography possible, and its technical development also accelerated dramatically in the decades that followed.
