Blacked Out Man Can't Remember His Horrific Actions
In March of 2021, police in York, Massachusetts responded to a call about a man who was seen beating a woman behind a large rock at Short Sands Beach. Officers arrived to find 35-year-old mother-of-three Rhonda Pattelena unresponsive with blunt force injuries to the head. She had been beaten to death by her domestic partner, 33-year-old Jeffrey Buchannan, who could be seen approaching the victim from behind and repeatedly striking her in the head with a rock on surveillance footage from nearby businesses. Following his arrest, Buchannan told investigators that he had “blacked out” and didn’t remember ending Pattelena, who had taken him to Short Sands because she wanted him to see her favorite beach. Buchannan had a lengthy history of abusing Pattelena and other women, and had previously served a two-year prison sentence for assaulting her and refusing to let her leave her home. He pleaded not guilty to Pattelena’s ending her life by reason of insanity, with the defense arguing that he was experiencing a psychiatric crisis marked by delusions and paranoia at the time of the incident. Plans for a trial were met with major delays as Buchannan underwent two psychological evaluations and petitioned the court for a third. But his attempts to prove he was incompetent failed to hold up, and a trial date was finally set for late March of 2024, more than three years after Pattelena’s death. In an unexpected turn of events, Buchannan negotiated an agreement with prosecutors just days before the trial was scheduled to begin and pleaded guilty to unaliving. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
