How to Build Complex Vocabulary and Sentences
This video is a continuation of the video on ‘How to Teach Describing Skills’ • How I use This Game to Teach Describing Sk... , but in this video, I tackle how to expand on from 3-feature descriptions, which is how I introduce the structure of how to describe, with preschoolers and late-talkers.
In this video I demonstrate how you can teach;
• The structure of the next level of describing; what it looks like (features)
Adjectives (eg. heavy, delicate, hard, soft, etc.)
Size (big/small)
What it's made out of
Location (where it's found/stored)
As you engage the child is expanding on the above, ensure that your child is making connections of what you're saying, and not just offering the ideas, in which case you will be encouraging rote memorisation. You reinforce connections by asking questions that allow the child to reflect on what they know eg. "do you think the handle is made out of the same material as the head of the hammer?"
You also constantly build upon what the child knows. You do so by linking what is known from past experiences to this one. Eg."what do tigers have on the end of their paws?" Answer: claws. "This too is like a claw, and it's used for…"
