Words Not to Teach your Late-Talker
When a child is learning how to talk, particularly a child who is a late-talker, the words they learn can either help to accelerate language growth, or can thwart their efforts, and keep them stagnated in their language skills.
If your child is already engaged in ‘self-teaching’ through unsupervised screen time, they will inevitably pick up words that may or may not be useful to their language growth.
Some of examples of these unhelpful words they could pick up include;
1. Counting backwards from any number
2. Reciting the alphabet
3. Learning of basic concepts (eg. colour names, shapes, etc.) in a language other than their dominant language
Sadly, I have encountered far too many children who have mastered the alphabet, letter-sound conversions (phonics), can count to even 100 (forward, backwards, increments of 10), but only have a handful of words they are using symbolically.
I realise parents may not know that these ‘academic’ skills may not be as useful in their late-talker’s stage of development, or that they may not know what else to teach a child who isn’t talking!
