Could this be why your child is making slow progress in speech therapy

Have you ever delayed/procrastinated on doing something your system wasn’t getting immediate gratification for? Eg. your book-keeping, cleaning your house, writing your thesis, etc.

When we are faced with important tasks that do not immediately grant us gratification, we may experience internal “resistance” to performing them. Our resistance may make it that much easier for us to watch the next episode in a series after you promised yourself that you would stop after the 1.

Children are plagued with resistance just as much as adults.

Examples of ‘resistance’ in late talkers;
Refusing to practise the specific thing asked
Crying/throwing a tantrum

For school-age children, ‘resistance’ can show up as;
Saying they no longer wish to do something
Multiple new interests in activities that quickly get abandoned
Saying something is “too hard” (refusing to engage with anything unfamiliar)

So, how do you safely rescue a child from their own resistance?

Well, you can’t! 🙈

Your work as the parent is to deliver pleasant experiences immediately after a difficult situation, which practising saying words/sounds can be for a child who has a speech/language delay.

That new skill (sound, word, etc.) will not get learnt or become easier unless your child actually goes through the motions of practicing it!

Understanding this idea can deliver exponentially faster outcomes from therapy!
