#finalfantasy #gameofthrones #devilmaycry
I’ve wanted this game for a while now initially I wanted to play this after Star Wars Jedi survivor and it was one of the games I was really looking to in 2023 along with Spider-Man 2.
It’s now over half way through in 2024 and this comes after the 1 year anniversary of final fantasy XVI but everything happens in its own time. You know the feeling you wait for something and it’s just as good as you had hoped that’s how I feel with this game.
Jon Snow May Cry. Iron Throne Devil Hunter Aura. FF16: Game of Thrones. Some of the names I tried to come up with, the games influences are quite clear and the work really well. Essentially you’re playing game of thrones meets devil may cry and I’m here for it, Ryota Suzuki worked as the combat director and he has previously worked on DMC. I restarted game of thrones in anticipation of house of dragon while playing and currently on GoT S4 at the time of writing.
The combat has so many levels of mastery to it that I enjoy your style continuously evolves as you unlock eikons figure out what they can do, incorporate it and master he different skills. Phoenix (fire), Ifrit (angry fire lol), Garuda (wind), Ramuh (thunder lightning), Titan (earth), Bahamut (flare), Shiva (ice), Odin (darkness / time). Are all available to play with offering different abilities like literally stopping time and allowing for combos resets, enemy launches, area of effect damage, juggles, single target damage and many more and each eikon (aeon/ guardian force) has their own flashy finisher. Leviathan (water) and Ultima (holy?) are also available in the dlc Echoes of the Fallen and The Rising Tide.
My combat style I thought I would have phoenix as my foundation as the final fantasy 15 warp strike like ability called phoenix shift would be too good to give up but it was Garuda I felt that was more my foundation. Enemy launches and mid air activations allowing me to be safe stylish seemed to good to give up. Additionally when titan was unlocked coming back to the ground with a powerful mid air activation provided so much synergy for my style. At time I did wish there were more options for mid air combat but also while it takes inspiration from DMC it isn’t that game and with zankuteskun it’s clear for some moments they want you to be on the ground. The scenes where I’m wearing the branded armour you can see me learning the basic of what would be my foundation of mid air combos and even torgal and basic magic burst combo. I like the game provides a lot of ways to dodge and parry. You start off with precision evade and parry (which is very hard to pull off) but a lot of the eikons have methods to evade and parry which was cool too.
A criticism of the game for me not enough costumes actually or armour like not getting the hood up costume was such a missed opportunity for me. I like that they change it in specific story eras though but some of the swords looked really even though I stuck to the cover art one cause I thought it looked too cool after a while but I think the invictus looks good too. Another criticism is the semi open world is too bland, you can do side quests but to be honest there isn’t much going on in the world. It didn’t bother me too much as that’s not why I got the game but can understandable see why it would bother others.
Odin eikon was actually super cool, him on his six legged horse which in myth he got from Loki was too cool. Bahamut was really cool too but to be honest all the eikons had cool design. Special shout out to Garuda (she got a phatty).
when Odin is unlocked the move set is clearly inspired by (motivated) vergil from dmc and I love it. Judgement cut and judgement end found their way into final fantasy.
The standouts of the game include the boss battles, while I don’t think they’re complex and hard (by extension I don’t think the game is hard) but the spectacle of the boss battles is jaw dropping and really felt like PlayStation 5 moments in particular Bahamut and titan. Another part of the game I’d like to praise are the particle effects I don’t usually notice things like that but they were really good in this game. The music was exceptional though I wished at some points they had more themes to cycle through for the battle songs.
I am a fan of final fantasy and have had moments with final fantasy 7, final fantasy 7 advent children, final fantasy 8, final fantasy 10 l, final fantasy versus 13 aka final fantasy 15 (kingslaive and the anime) and now 16. The series knows what it is in terms of story and they always try new things gameplay wise. I’ll never forget seeing the initial final fantasy versus 13 trailer and waiting YEARS to play it.
I’ll be interested to see what the mod community can do when it releases on PC September 17
