CHORAL INTROIT
CALL TO WORSHIP
We are called to be witnesses who bring life to light.
We know the Spirit guards for safe keeping every life
entrusted to God.
We listen for the altar call of grace at every address.
We know grace is a prayer for help answered.
In all that we do, we are growing together in God’s grace, ever at
work for the life of the world.
We thank God that the same Savior who accompanies us
leads us to bear witness to grace at work in others.
Written by Dr. Lisa Hancock, Discipleship Ministries, July 2024.
*OPENING HYMN: #432 Jesu, Jesu
*OPENING PRAYER (Unison)
Though you are God, with all the influence and status that the
name implies, you refused to pull rank and parade your power
among us.
Instead, you chose to step down into our experience, living among
us, as one of us, with all the struggle and suffering that goes with
being human.

More than that, you adopted the role of servant, washing feet,
serving people of no reputation or social standing, and giving of
yourself completely.
As incredible as it sounds, you are the God who serves, and we
can respond in no other way than to give ourselves to you in praise.
Amen. Adapted from by John van de Laar and posted on the Sacredise.com website.

PROCLAMATION AND RESPONSE

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
Lord, open our hearts and minds by the power of your Holy Spirit,
that, as the Scriptures are read, and your Word proclaimed, we may
hear with joy what you say to us today. Amen.
FIRST LESSON: Job 28:1-7
SECOND LESSON: Hebrews 5:1-10
HYMN: #530 Are Ye Able, Said the Master
*GOSPEL LESSON: Mark 10:35-45
CHORAL ANTHEM
SERMON
RESPONSE TO THE WORD: #85 We Believe In One True God
CONFESSION/PARDON
Gracious God, we confess that too often we clamor for
attention. Me! Me! Look at how important I am. That’s what our
actions say. Like James and John, we pray selfish prayers, for
power, for position, for prestige—for what? So that people will
say how great we are? Teach us that true greatness comes
from humble service. Show us how to roll up our sleeves, dig
in, and lend a hand; even when no one else will. Preoccupy us

with humility, then greatness can come when we least expect
it. Give us the grace to live as humble servants. Amen.
Written by Kwasi I. Kena, The Africana Worship Book, Year B (Nashville: Discipleship Resources, 2007), 162.
Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive all your sins through our
Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the
power of the holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. UMH #890
JOYS/CONCERNS
God of mercy and healing, you who hear the cries of those in need,
receive these petitions of your people that all who are troubled may
know peace, comfort, and courage.
Please feel free to call out your joys/concerns/praise at this time. Prayers of the People, concluding with:
Life-giving God, heal our lives, that we may acknowledge your
wonderful deeds and offer you thanks from generation to
generation through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
