Strength training as part of an athlete's performance program should be considered as movement pattern training. When you understand that exercises should be chosen to build and reinforce foundational patterns critical to activity specific coordination, real performance benefits can be seen and measured. Strength/power does not correlate to real activity specific performance unless it is USED in a coordinated and effective manner. But remember just because an exercise is labeled "functional" or "looks" like an activity doesn't mean it is actually impacting coordination - it must elicit the appropriate pattern for it to be impactful.
