On October 16, 1946, a historic execution took place in the gymnasium of Nuremberg Prison: The condemned remnants of the Nazi leadership and the highest representatives of Hitler's government were led one by one to carry out their death sentences. Among those executed were former Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop, SS official Ernst Kaltenbrunner, responsible for brutal crimes, and the fanatical Julius Streicher, a staunch supporter of Adolf Hitler. However, one famous figure was missing that day: Hermann Göring, the head of the Luftwaffe and one of the most prominent defendants in the Nuremberg Trials, who took his own life by taking a poison capsule just hours before his scheduled execution, thus escaping the gallows.
