Blue Bossa Jam
This video is the result of just having some fun...
"Blue Bossa" is a famous jazz composition by Kenny Dorham - and while messing around with my recording setup at home, I ended up making a version of it myself.
Obviously I didn't play it as a "bossa", but rather in an Afro-Cuban style..
This is one of those songs that is great for musicians who are just starting out, but then it quickly falls out of favor with more experienced 'professional' musicians because they associate it with students, or music school, or amateur jam sessions, or whatever.
I think it's a mistake to underestimate the power of these songs simply because they are played very often by musicians who are just starting out. There's a reason why it became a standard - because it's a good song, that's why.
Kenny Dorham certainly was cool when he played it, so were Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson, Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams, and all of the other great musicians that have covered this song.
The process:
1) Recorded the vibes track with a conga loop in headphones.
2) Recorded the piano part while following the vibes part closely
3) Added the bass - this took a while because I'm not great at bass.
4) Added the drums about a week later.
