Guatemalan pianist Estuardo Hernandez performs "Yö meren rannalla" (Night by the Sea), Op. 34, No. 1 by Heino Kaski (1885-1957). The recording was made live during the Klaipėda Piano Masters "88 Colors of the Sea" project at the Palanga Kurhaus. It included 25 piano miniatures based on the subject of the sea.
Heino Kaski was a Finnish composer, teacher and pianist. He is best known for his piano miniatures (which display his natural gift for melody), and for his songs, along with many other pieces. His "Night by the Sea" is one of a set of three pieces Op. 34. The piece is flowing, with a cantabile (Italian for "songlike") melody. The left-hand arpeggios depict the endless breaking of waves onto the beach, beneath the right-hand melody.
Estuardo Hernandez (born 1991) is a prizewinner of numerous piano competitions in his native Guatemala, as well as Dominican Republic, Mexico, and USA. In the year 2011 he performed at the Carnegie Hall and was named Guatemala’s Artist of the Year. He is the founder of an internet platform for piano education, as well as the co-founder of Encuentro Pianistas Guatemala festival. He currently pursues Artist‘s Diploma at the Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg.
