Mutabaruka ~ Butta Pan Kulcha
Mutabaruka was drawn into the black awareness movement of the early '70s. He was raised as a Roman Catholic although he was subsequently drawn toward the Rastafari. He adopted the name Mutabaruka, a term from Kinyarwanda, the Rwandan language, which describes one who is always victorious.
He was among the new wave of Jamaican poets that emerged in the early 1970s such as Michael Smith and Oko Onura. His new poems were published in Jamaica’s legendary Swing Magazine collected in his first publication `Outcry’.
In 1977 he began performing live and recorded `Outcry’, backed by the Light of Saba. This led to him supporting Jimmy Cliff in concert followed by sessions with Earl `Chinna’ Smith and our featured track performed live in 1981, the classic `Butta Pan Kulcha.’
