Ballistic Gel Shots
Ballistic gel (or gelatin) is a biomimetic material designed to simulate the material properties (density and viscosity) of human muscle tissue. The ballistics gel formulation is used as standardized media for testing things like ammunition, hand-held weapons, shrapnel, and others. For scientific reporting, generally folks formulate a gel that is standardized by the FBI, and this gel needs to be refrigerated and generally has a strong yellow/orange tint in color. In this example, we used clear ballistics gel purely to see how ammo penetrates, cavitates, and damages the gel.
