Yesterday afternoon, my school decided to get my class depressed and organized a trip to the Holocaust museum, in Montreal. World War II has always been a touchy subject for me. The fact that one evil, screwed up dude killed over 6 million Jews doesn't sit well with me at all. Worst so, the fact that the world witnessed this tragedy and decided to act on it about three years later makes me quite sick.
The museum was dark and quiet. Obviously, since it's paying homage to the millions of lives lost in the course of six years. I decided to go through the centre by myself, hoping to actually comprehend why a sick man would do such a thing. After all, he was human. Piece by piece, I clearly understood that Hitler had a strategy. He wanted to corrupt the minds of every human being. He was implanting horrid remarks about black people, Slavs and Jews. And slowly, but surely, people started to believe him.
It disgusted me to see that Canada was a part of it. When the government asked the population if they wished to greet innocent Jews into the country, 80% of the whole population refused. It's.Absolutely.Disgusting. I was ashamed of my country.
When I caught a glimpse of a video showing Jews literally dying in the dirty gas chambers, it hit me hard. I started bawling hard. They were treated like animals. Even worse so, they were treated as disgusting pieces of dirt. They had no rights. No voice. They were trapped. They knew their fate when they embarked in those horrible trucks. They were heading to their death.
I choked up when I read a quote from a woman before her death. Her last words were, and I quote; "Hell has got to be better than this". It got to me. It's incredibly sad and shameful.
I don't want you to get all depressed. I won't talk about this long. It just... shocked me to the core. I still don't comprehend how one person had the ability to destroy a nation. A nation of 9 million people. Two thirds of Jews were eliminated. How can a sane human being see the death of hundreds, of thousands of people and not speak up ?!
6 million lives lost. And the world could've spoken up and saved those lives. A Holocaust survivor taught us yesterday that there were 4 groups of people during the war; the victims, the monsters, the people brave enough to risk their lives to save others and the audience members, who kept their mouths shut.
I realized something yesterday; the Nazis were horrible human beings. But 80% of Canadians refused to help. They were the audience members, watching the show. And because of it, or at least, partly because of it, 6 million innocent people died.
Never be a bystander. You have a voice. Use it.
And if they dare to ignore you...
