Mit Urgewalt schieben sich der Morteratschgletscher und der Persgletscher von den Gipfeln des Piz Palü und des Piz Bernina (4'048,6 m ü. M.) in Richtung Pontresina. Bei den schroffen Zacken der Isla Persa (2'850 m ü. M.) vereinigen sich die beiden Eisströme zur Gletscherzunge, die nach knapp 2 km endet. Vor 120 Jahren reichte der Morteratschgletscher noch 2 km weiter ins Tal.
An seinem Fuss, rund 5 km ausserhalb von Pontresina, befindet sich die Station Morteratsch der le-gendären Berninabahn. Um 1860 kam die Eisfront hier zum Stillstand. Bei Fertigstellung der Trasse im Jahr 1910 lag die Gletscherzunge bereits 600 Meter von den Gleisen entfernt. Seither ist der Gletscher um weitere 1500 Meter geschrumpft.
The Morteratsch Glacier and the Pers Glacier extend from the peaks of the Piz Palü and the Piz Bernina (4,049 m above sea level) towards Pontresina just like huge tongues. At the Isla Persa rock formation between the two ice streams, the two glacier arms merge to form a glacier tongue which ends after about 2 km. As recently as 120 years ago, the Morteratsch Glacier extended about 2 km further into the valley. At the bottom of the Morteratsch Glacier about 5 km outside of Pontresina is a stop of the famous Bernina railroad.
