Parenting and working during the pandemic | Panel discussion
Our online panel discusses the difficulties people in our community are facing when balancing parenting and work at this turbulent time.
Amongst others, we cover topics such as:
What tough lessons did we learn in the first lockdown, and how has that prepared us for the second wave and beyond?
What would we like the "new normal" to look like for working parents?
What have been the positives of parenting in a pandemic which we would like to hold onto?

Kirstie is a BBC journalist, mostly writing longreads for the BBC News website with a focus on the stories of women. In 2017 she co-founded The Second Source, an alternative network for women and non-binary journalists. The group runs a successful mentorship scheme, with a particular focus on those from non-traditional journalist backgrounds. She has a two year old son called Elliott.
John Crowley (@mrjohncrowley)
John is an editor and consultant who has more than two decades of experience working for local, national and international news titles. He has taken on digital and managerial roles for The Daily Telegraph, The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek and The Irish Post among others. As a freelance journalist, he is well versed in writing and commissioning content around business, technology, newsroom management, burnout and disinformation. Recently he published a report entitled ‘Journalism in the Time of Covid,’ which details the mental strain journalists find themselves under during the pandemic. He is a father of two boys aged seven and ten.
Shanae Dennis (@Shanaedennis_)
Shanae is a biochemist who has worked in Clinical Research initiating global clinical trials and most recently co-founded a Clinical Research Consultancy which supports researchers from LMICs navigate the UK healthcare infrastructure. She is also a mother to a 7 year old boy, freelance journalist producing content around health equalities and a campaigner/ambassador for the Young Women’s Trust.

Azana is an Afro-Caribbean broadcast journalist working at the BBC. She joined the BBC as a Political Journalist in 2018 and has spent most of her career focusing on political stories that impact women, young people and diverse communities within the U.K. She has worked as a reporter and producer on regional radio and Newsnight, Victoria Derbyshire, Politics Live and outlets like BBC Newsbeat and BBC London.
As a young parent to a 5 year old - Azana is passionate about breaking down perceptions on young mothers and the career insecurities that can stem from this.
