Newly Announced Cinema Gear that Caught my Eye
Welcome back to another episode of the podcast. This time around we’re taking a quick look at some recent cinema lens and camera announcements that caught my eye.
Canon has finally announced RF mount cinema lenses, though I’m not sure why this took so long and for that matter why this is even a thing (as opposed to a mount conversion that could be done to any of their existing lenses). From what I can tell, these are just RF mount versions of the original cinema primes. However, being native RF mount, they do support full aberration correction on the R5C and C70.

Next up is Cooke’s new SP3 compact mirrorless lenes. While not as fast as Canon’s, they’re a good deal smaller and lighter. On top of that they’re convertible between Canon’s RF mount and Sony’s E mount. Down side, they’re even more expensive than Canon’s RF mount cinema primes, but they are Cookes after all. Unfortunately, there aren’t any electronics here, for either mount, so no focusing aids or metadata.

On the camera front, we have the real interesting option for the budget shooter. Blackmagic Design has announced a full frame Cinema Camera. While I’m not overwhelmed by the specs — though I did miss that it can do full frame DCI 6K at up to 48 FPS, and 2.4:1 @ up to 60 FPS — the price makes it an interesting option for the those on a budget and in need of several cameras. The L mount is supported by Sigma, Panasonic and Lecia for AF lenses, you can find budget cinema lenses in it from many manufacturers, and it can be easily adapted to PL if you want to go that way.

Finally, if you have the cash to support it, Sony has released a new camera in their pro cinema level CineAlta line: the Burano. Aimed at solo shooters this 8K full frame camera looks really solid. Avaiable in both E and PL mounts, with autofocus for supported lenses. And a laundry list of features form in body IS (which works even with PL mount lenes), to modern Sony face and subject tracking AF, to a 16-stop sensor and a 16-bit raw format. However, all this comes at a price, a $25,000 price tag that is.
