Mangifera indica is the botanical name of Mango. The Mango is the national fruit of India, Pakistan and the Philippines. The Mango first finds mention in the songs of Sanskrit poet Kalidasa in the 4th Century. It is believed that Mango was tasted by Alexander the Great. Later in the 16th Century Emperor Akbar planted over a hundred thousand mango trees in Darbhanga, Bihar. This orchard is now called as the Lakhi Bagh (having one Lakh Trees)
The young leaves of the mango are copper red but become green on maturity. The Mango is perhaps the most delicious fruit on earth. The mango helps in digestion and has a cooling effect during the hot summers. India is the largest Mango producer in the world – producing 40% of the World’s Mangoes. The wood of the Mango is used for making low-quality furniture and some musical instruments.
