4 Ways to Change Steam Deck Brightness Levels | Including Desktop Mode

You've probably already found a couple of ways to change the screen brightness on your Steam Deck, but you may not be aware of a few of these methods. Today, I'll go over three different ways this can be done in Gaming Mode and then one quick way to do this while it's in Desktop Mode.

So right off the bat, you've likely already found the brightness slider within the Quick Settings menu.
This can be located by pressing the Ellipse button here on the right side of the Steam Deck.
And then making sure the Cog Wheel Settings menu is highlighted.
This method is my go-to when in Gaming Mode on SteamOS or while I'm actively playing a game.
We can access anywhere except in Desktop Mode. So I'll get to that a bit later.
Now, you can also find the Steam Deck brightness slider by pressing the Steam button on the left side of the deck.
Then diving into the full Settings area.
Now just scroll through this list until you have the Display menu highlighted.
And again, you should easily be able to make the display brighter or darker.
The third method I'll be showing you today is a bit awkward to perform, but I can see it being handy in certain situations.
If we press and hold the Steam button, we can then press up or down on the left thumbstick to increase or decrease the brightness of the display.
This will work anywhere in Gaming Mode as well. So whether you're browsing your Steam Library or looking through the latest games on sale in the Steam store. This gesture will work.
I even tested this while in the middle of playing a game, and works there as well.
But sadly, it does not work when your Steam Deck is in Desktop Mode.
I've noticed that a lot of the controls or features in Gaming Mode simply do not work in Desktop Mode.
Which is a shame, but maybe Valve can improve this over time with SteamOS.
So when you're in Desktop Mode, we can change the brightness of the screen by left-clicking on the Battery icon down here in the system tray of the taskbar.
Not only will you get access to some battery features here, but there's also an easy to use slider to adjust the brightness levels as well. This is the Steam Deck brightness shortcut I use when the device is in Desktop Mode.
There could be many other ways of doing this here, or even in Gaming Mode.
