Hello, everyone. Today, I'm going to show you how to install Proton GE on your Steam Deck. I'll then walk you through setting up a game to use that version of Proton instead of the latest stable release.

what is proton ge
For those who may not be familiar with this, Proton is the compatibility layer that allows Windows games to run on Linux and the Steam Deck as well as they currently do. Proton GE is basically the latest development version of Proton and using it over the current stable version can bring added performance to your games while also squashing some annoying bugs that you may be experiencing.
It's usually recommended to just play a game with the current stable version of Proton. . .but many of the fixes that are currently being worked on can be implemented right now instead of having to wait for them to be pushed out to the stable channel.

So let me show you how to install Proton GE on the Steam Deck. We begin by first rebooting into Desktop Mode.
Then you need to launch the Discover app from the taskbar down here.
And simply search for the term proton in this box right here.
Look for the app labeled ProtonUp-Qt
And then tap the Install button
Once it has been installed, you can find it from the Steam Deck menu
Now, click the Add Version button
Then, make sure you have the latest version of Proton selected in the drop-down menu here.
Simply click on the Install button and let the application install that version of Proton GE to your Steam Deck
Close up the application and then reboot back into Gaming Mode.

After you have installed the current latest version of Proton GE, you can switch any of your games to using it by selecting the Gear icon here.
Then look in the Compatibility tab so you can change this to the version of Proton GE that you just installed.
And that's all there is to it.
Launch the game like you normally would and it will use that version of Proton instead of the latest stable release.
conclusion
Some people like to add the ProtonUp-Qt application as a non-Steam game.
So that you can load it up from Gaming Mode instead of rebooting into Desktop Mode.
The advantage to doing this is that it enables you to install the latest version of Proton GE without needing to reboot into Desktop Mode.
New versions of Proton GE seem to be released every 1-3 weeks. . .sometimes there's just a couple of days between releases.
So, if you're really wanting to stay on top of things, having ProtonUp-Qt accessible in Gaming Mode will make things much faster.
