Global warming is making the Earth hotter year by year,
and research shows the planet has warmed about 1.1 degrees Celsius since the late 1800s,
but that small number hides a very big impact on human health.
Countries close to the equator already live with high temperatures,
places in Africa, South Asia, and parts of Latin America face heat almost all year,
but now the heat waves are becoming longer, stronger, and more dangerous.
The human body works best at a stable temperature,
body temperature around 37 degrees Celsius is where most systems run smoothly,
but when outside heat rises too much, the body struggles to cool down.
Sweating is one way the body keeps cool,
it releases water from the skin and lowers temperature,
but in very hot and humid weather, sweating does not work well.
Humidity makes the air saturated with moisture,
so sweat cannot evaporate easily from the skin,
but this means the body cannot release heat fast enough.
Research shows that when the wet bulb temperature reaches 35 degrees Celsius,
the human body can no longer cool itself effectively,
but even healthy people can face serious risk within a few hours.
People living near the equator often face this combination,
high heat and high humidity at the same time,
but this creates a dangerous situation for millions of people.
Heat exhaustion is one of the first warning signs,
it brings dizziness, weakness, heavy sweating, and headaches,
but if ignored, it can turn into heat stroke very quickly.
Heat stroke is a medical emergency,
body temperature can rise above 40 degrees Celsius,
but organs like the brain, heart, and kidneys can start to fail.
Research from global health groups shows that heat related deaths are rising,
between 2000 and 2020, deaths among people over 65 increased by about 70 percent,
but younger people working outdoors are also at risk.
Farmers, construction workers, and street vendors are highly exposed,
they often spend long hours under direct sunlight,
but many cannot afford to stop working even in extreme heat.
In countries near the equator, a large part of the population works outside,
agriculture alone employs more than 40 percent of workers in some regions,
but this means millions are directly exposed to rising temperatures.
