The story of Malik ibn Dinar Al-Sami's repentance is a very inspiring one. Malik was the son of a Persian slave from Sijistan (Kabul) and became a student of the Tabi'in scholar Hasan Al-Basri.
He was considered an expert in authentic hadith and transmitted hadith from prominent scholars of the past, such as Anas ibn Malik and Ibn Sirin. Malik ibn Dinar was also known as a Quran calligrapher. He died around 130 AH (748 CE).
He committed almost all kinds of sins until Allah's guidance finally came to him. Malik ibn Dinar recounted, "My life began with vanity, drunkenness, sin, oppressing people, consuming their rights, taking usury, and beating people.
I committed all kinds of injustice; there was not a single sin but I committed it. It was so evil that people did not respect me because of my depravity." Malik bin Dinar said: "One day, I longed for marriage and children. So I married and was blessed with a daughter whom I named Fatima."
I loved Fatima very much. Every time she grew older, my faith grew stronger and my sins diminished. Once, Fatima saw me holding a glass of alcohol, so she approached me and pushed the glass away, causing it to spill on my clothes.
