The story of Sayyidina Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) and 10 Khawarij members who returned to Islam can teach us how knowledge and wisdom can soften a person. This story is told by Sheikh Muhammad ibn Abu Bakr Ushfury in his book, Al-Mawaizh Al-Usfuriyah.

Khawarij literally means "Those Who Depart." This group initially recognized Ali ibn Abi Talib's authority and then rejected it. They were called Khawarij because they departed from the religion of Islam and the leadership of the Muslims.

Their departure from the leadership of the Muslims began during the reign of Caliph Ali ibn Abi Talib, when two envoys met in a place called Khoruro (a place in the Kufa region). For this reason, they were also called Al-Khoruriyyah. The Khawarij often resorted to violence and bloodshed to advance their mission and goals.

Another tradition states that the Khawarij were followers of Sayyidina Ali who left the ranks due to disagreements with Ali's decision to accept arbitration in the Battle of Siffin in 37 AH with Muawiyah ibn Abu Sufyan's group regarding the caliphate.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) once said: "I am the city of knowledge. Ali is the gate of that city."

When the Khawarij heard this hadith, they became envious of Sayyidina Ali. Then 10 of their great men gathered and discussed: "We will ask Ali the same question and see how he answers it. If he answers our questions with different answers, then we will know that he is truly a learned man, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said."
