Case Study: Historic Hadley House Gets New Life in Thoughtful Redesign
Hadley House has been a fixture on Main Street in Wenham, Massachusetts, since it was built in the mid-19th century by Frank Hadley.
Jeff Novack of Novack Properties was charmed by the home’s character and uniqueness. Novack purchased the property in 2021 and teamed up with SeaGlass Architects and Jackson General Carpentry to set about painstakingly renovating the historic home.
The house had fallen into disrepair after eight decades of deferred maintenance. There were still elements of the original home intact, like the mansard roof, but there was almost no original detail left.
Novack and team used photos and historic documents as references to restore the home’s architectural history and integrity while bringing it into the modern age. The clapboard siding was replicated in detail by craftspeople. A new covered porch features Victorian Folk gingerbread detailing, period-appropriate corbels, and a frieze.
The most significant update was foundational – literally. The home was lifted off its original foundation, rotated 90 degrees to face the street, and set back 40 feet from the property on a new concrete foundation.
The team used a combination of windows and doors from the Ultimate and Elevate collections to recreate the home’s original windows. Both Ultimate and Elevate use wood, which was necessary to meet the standards of the Wenham Historic Commission, and both collections offered flexibility, quality, and excellent performance.
