In this Madden video, I’m breaking down one of my favorite plays that can lead to big yardage and even touchdowns—the Snag HB Wheel from the Gun Doubles Y Off Nasty formation, found in the Lions offensive playbook. This play is ideal for countering defenses that run Cover Zero or Cover One, such as the "Nickel 2-4 Over Storm Brave." It’s perfect for exposing defenses that bring heavy pressure but lack deep safety help.
In this video, I’ll show you how to execute the play step-by-step and highlight the routes that make it so effective. Our primary target is the halfback on a wheel route down the left sideline. With this route, we can take advantage of the defense’s coverage gaps, particularly against man-to-man or aggressive blitz formations. I’ll also show you how to identify these coverages before the snap to make sure you know when this play has the best chance for success.
Timing and protection are crucial for this play, especially when facing heavy blitzes. I’ll walk you through setting up a six-man protection scheme by hot-routing the tight end to pass block. This adjustment allows for enough time in the pocket to wait for the halfback to break free down the sideline. By adding this extra blocker, you’ll significantly increase your chances of executing a big play without getting sacked. I’ll also cover how to adjust if the defense switches to zone coverage, showing alternative routes that can be viable options depending on how the defense lines up.
One tip I love to use with this play is adding motion to the tight end before the snap. Moving him across the formation can confuse the defense and change who’s covering the running back. This adjustment often leaves the halfback even more open, giving us a clear path for a big gain.
