I’m excited to break down one of my favorite plays under center in Madden 25 for getting big yardage against man coverage: the PA Deep Cross out of the I Form Close formation. If you’re looking for a powerful deep pass play to add to your Madden playbook, this breakdown is for you.
Let’s start with the setup. We’re running this play from the Vikings Playbook, and it’s called "PA Deep Cross." This play gives us a chance to get down the field with three passing routes, especially thanks to a reliable seven-man pass protection scheme. With this, you’ll have all the time you need to make the right read and connect with your receiver. The key player here is the primary receiver on the deep crossing route, typically Addison. He runs a 15- to 17-yard route across the field, making him an excellent target, especially against man coverage where he can create separation and get open. This route is particularly effective because the play-action fake to the running back pulls linebackers in, creating more space for Addison.
On the left side, we have Jefferson, who usually runs a streak. Here’s a tip: you can hot route him into a post route, which helps to draw defenders and gives you a great alternative if Addison isn’t open. This adjustment can work wonders, particularly if the defense is running cover one or zero, allowing you to take advantage of Jefferson’s deep pass route to open up a potential one-play touchdown.
You'll also notice that when you execute this play, the play fake holds the linebackers back, giving our receiver plenty of time to cross the field. This gives you a big advantage since it reduces the chance of linebackers interrupting the play as Addison makes his way across. Another helpful feature is the built-in seven-man protection scheme: your five linemen plus the fullback and tight end stay in to block, keeping pressure off your quarterback and allowing you ample time to make the read.
Once you’ve completed a few of these passes, defenses will start to adjust, and that’s where the hot route for Jefferson really shines. Suppose the opponent manually controls the safety to try to shut down Addison’s route. In that case, Jefferson’s post route opens up the possibility for a big gain over the top if he’s left with some separation. However, be careful with this throw, as a risky read can lead to an interception if the cornerback stays close to Jefferson.
If Addison and Jefferson are both covered, look to your running back in the left flat as a check-down option. He won’t pick up as many yards but will keep the chains moving and avoid a negative play.
Overall, this play is versatile and reliable against several types of coverages. Whether it’s cover one, cover two, or even a QB spy, you’ll find options with this PA Deep Cross play to gain yardage and keep the defense guessing.
