Hey everyone, welcome back to another Madden Tips video! In today’s breakdown, we’re diving into Two Zone Blitz Setups from the Nickel Double Mug - Nickel 2 Trap. I’m excited to show you how to apply consistent pressure on the quarterback, whether through the A or B gap, depending on how you set up the play. In this video, we’ll be utilizing the Houston Texans playbook and featuring superstar defensive end Danielle Hunter in our blitz setup.
The formation we’re focusing on today is Nickel Double Mug, with the key play being Nickel 2 Trap. I’ll walk you through the exact substitutions and adjustments to make your defense even more lethal. One of the first things I like to do is sub in a fast defensive lineman at the weak-side defensive tackle position. This allows you to generate quick pressure on the quarterback, which is crucial in high-pressure situations. I’m using Hunter in this spot, and his speed makes him the perfect fit for this setup.
We’ll also make some changes at safety, bringing in faster players to help with coverage while the blitz is happening. For example, I’m subbing in a cornerback to the free safety position for better agility and coverage ability. While these substitutions aren’t mandatory, they really help maximize the effectiveness of this blitz.
Next, I’ll walk you through some important coaching adjustments. I usually leave the auto flip off, but I like to keep the auto alignment at default. This ensures that the linebackers are positioned correctly in the A gaps. I also like using the coverage shells to keep my opponent guessing about whether I’m playing man or zone defense. This is key to fooling them into making mistakes.
We’ll then get into the details of the two blitz setups. The first one brings pressure from the weak-side defensive tackle, while the second setup creates pressure from either the free safety or the nickelback. Both setups involve sending five defenders to rush the quarterback, while still maintaining a solid zone coverage shell. I’ll show you how to execute each setup and what adjustments to make to maximize the pressure.
Lastly, I’ll highlight some potential weaknesses of these setups, including leaving certain areas of the field open to quick passes. However, with the right mix of pressure and coverage adjustments, these blitzes can be game-changers.
Make sure to stick around till the end for a breakdown of the X's and O's of the Play in instant replay, where we’ll analyze blocking assignments and show exactly how and where the pressure comes from.
