Acropolis Family IP Testing: Speculātor minor #1 (Mixed Results)

To provide adequate protection from liquid ingress under expected installation scenarios while installed right-side-up, Acropolis artefacts should demonstrate ingress protection ratings of at least IPx3 to ensure they are ``protected against drops of rainwater at up to 60 degrees from the vertical''. While this will protect artefacts within Hyper-Soundwalk Series pop-up exhibitions, to provide additional security and increase installation options, the optimal Acropolis family liquid ingress protection rating is IPx4. Therefore, the minimum enclosure IP rating for Acropolis family artefacts is IP33, while the optimal rating is IP54.

This footage shows controlled liquid ingress tests that were conducted to supplement the in-situ data. For the test, four Speculātor minor artefacts were `installed' in a shower basin suspended in the air using typical exhibition hardware. Then, to simulate torrential rain, the shower head was directed at the enclosures from 2 meters at a 45-degree angle. The enclosures were subjected to a water flow of 7 litres per minute for at least ten minutes before examining the enclosures for liquid ingress.

When installed without the application of sealant (see prior videos in this series), the enclosures experience minor ingress amounting to a few millimeters of water. However, after applying quick-drying silicone sealant to the enclosure's perimeter before mating the two halves (as shown in later videos), as is typical when precipitation is expected during installation, the Speculator enclosures survived the test without liquid ingress. While these tests were not conducted according to official IEC 60529 testing standards, these positive results combined with in-situ data have provided evidence for the Speculātor enclosures to claim an approximate liquid ingress protection rating of IPx4, which equates to ``water splashed against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effect''.
