Acropolis Family IP Testing: Explorator spinner #1 (Initial Failure)

To provide adequate protection from liquid ingress under expected installation scenarios while installed right-side-up, Acropolis artefacts should demonstrate ingress protection ratings of at least IPx3 to ensure they are ``protected against drops of rainwater at up to 60 degrees from the vertical''. While this will protect artefacts within Hyper-Soundwalk Series pop-up exhibitions, to provide additional security and increase installation options, the optimal Acropolis family liquid ingress protection rating is IPx4. Therefore, the minimum enclosure IP rating for Acropolis family artefacts is IP33, while the optimal rating is IP54.

This footage shows controlled liquid ingress tests that were conducted to supplement the in-situ data. For the test, Explorator spinner was `installed' in a shower basin suspended in the air using typical exhibition hardware. Then, to simulate torrential rain, the shower head was directed at the enclosures from 2 metres at a 45 degree angle. The enclosures were subjected to a water flow of 6.98 litres per second for at least ten minutes before examining the enclosures for liquid ingress.

In this first test, several ingress issues were detected with the enclosure design. The first problem can with a number of the topcap interface components. The artefact was in storage and moved several times since its last “exhibition”. As a result, a few of the enclosure fasteners became loose. I failed to adequately tighten and inspect these possible ingress points before the initial test.

A second major source of ingress occurred with some SPDT switches which did not have adequate IP ratings and which were accidentally installed in place of the correct switches.

A third major source of ingress, and the one which was expected, occurred at the bottom of the artefact where the DC motor shaft exits the electronics enclosure. While this ingress was expected, the first two findings lead to some improvements in the artefact design to make it more resilient to environmental conditions.
